Porno Zambesc: On a small handful of occasions, my work has brought me to the Balkan country of Romania. It’s a country of beautiful landscapes, great food, and a lot of dark history. As a lover of all three, especially the latter, I grew to like Romania on my few trips there.
Years ago, when I first began to indulge in the wonderful world of internet porn, one of y favourite stars was a certain Sandra Romain. What I discovered was a fascinating story of porn smuggling, innovation, and sexual shame in what was one of the most tightly controlled countries in the Eastern Bloc with North Korean vibes.
In this article, I’m going to break down the story of porn in Communist Romania. From the overall attitude to sex, what porn was available and how Romanians obtained it, and what the situation is with porn in modern Romania. Communist Romania
Porno Zambesc wouldn’t be complete with a brief history lesson on Communist Romania in order to understand the world of porno in Romania. The story begins shortly after WW2 when Romania became a Communist dictatorship known as The Socialist Republic of Romania. In 1965, the most infamous leader of the country came to power: Nicolae Ceausescu.
After challenging the USSR and having his own independent foreign policy that aimed to make Romania one of the great world powers, Ceacescu initially held a popular status amongst many Romanians and the West. But that was soon to change after Ceacescu’s 1971 visit to China and North Korea.
On his visits abroad, Ceausescu was inspired by the personality cult leadership in China and the DPRK. Romania soon turned into a totalitarian dictatorship that saw widespread paranoia and oppression carried out by the Romanian secret police known as ”The Securitate”. Foreign debts and a series of economic disasters plunged the country into misery and poverty.
By 1989, Romania exploded in a revolution. Ceausescu was overthrown and executed alongside his wife Elena. Communism was over and large swathes of repression, although not all aspects, went with it. The act of discarding one of the most significant repressive aspects of the regime, the one placed upon sex, was a welcome one.
Sex in Romania During Communism
Even before Ceacescu went full dictator after his visit to Asia in 1971, he had already begun intruding in the sex lives of ordinary Romanians. The first was a year after coming to power in 1966 when he implemented a series of repressive birth control laws in order to recover the population that had been decimated in both WW1 and WW2.
These laws, known as Decree 770, made abortions illegal and heavily encouraged women to have as many children as possible with financial rewards as an incentive. The reason for this was too create a young workforce that would fuel the industrialization of Romania to make the country one of the world’s great powers.
Communist propaganda played a huge role in enforcing the decree. Young women were told that giving birth was their duty as a Patriotic Romania. As well as financial rewards, women who had over four kids were issued medals and titles such as ”Heroine”. As an extra push, single adults were hit with a so-called ”singles tax” which was essentially a fine for people who weren’t getting busy and making babies.
Unless the life of the mother was at risk during birth, any attempts made by women or doctors at carrying out abortion were heavily punished by the communist regime. Contraception was also non-existent outside of the black market. As a result, Romania experienced a skyrocketing birth rate in the 1970s which led to severe consequences for ordinary Romanians.
Despite the various methods of enforcing Decree 770, illegal abortions were common amongst Romanian citizens. Whilst some were carried out secretly by bribed doctors, others were carried out at home or by inexperienced friends. Of course, the latter often resulted in severe complications or death. This was dramatized in the incredible movie ”4 months, 3 weeks, and 2 days”.
Eventually, the decree backfired on the regime. Already struggling to pay off foreign debts, the population boom added intense pressure to the Romanian economy who failed to provide basic housing, food, and amenities. As a result, many children ended up in orphanages or discarded on the streets. When the regime fell in 1989, the resultant poverty only added to this harrowing issue.
Ironically, it was revealed in the post-Communist era that the dictator’s wife Elena Ceausescu was an avid voyeur. Elena was said to have had the rooms of fellow communist party couples bugged by the security services. She is said to have spent hours listening to the tapes, in particular the people she didn’t like within the party such as Violeta Andrei in order to listen to them having sex.
Romanian Porn During Communism
So, casual sex under communism was frowned upon. But what about indulging in porn? It will likely come as no surprise that the Communist Romanian regime frowned heavily upon Romanian porn too. You see, making babies was encouraged, but sex was seen as a taboo subject.
But just like the laws against abortions, Romanians came up with various methods to circumvent the anti-porn laws. As one of the main transport routes between Turkey and Europe, both by road and the Black Sea, Romania was a prime place for various types of porn to be smuggled in.
“I once found a Romanian erotic novel from the 1970s in my family’s library in which a militia officer falls in love with a comrade, It featured rubs and kisses for about a hundred pages, then he pours it into the Securitate and remains undamaged. this was the level of pornography.”

Porn magazines were the most common form of smut smuggled in. But for the Romanian families lucky enough to own a VHS, porn tapes were also a popular favourite. According to Good Living Bucharest, families with a VHS would often have a private movie night. These familes would sometimes charge a small entrance fee to watch a smuggled Western action movie followed by a porno zambesc. If caught by the secret police, the consequences would be severe.
Romania’s Black Sea Port of Constanta was a hub of smuggled porn. This was brought in by domestic or foreign sailors bringing it in from Western countries where hardcore porn was largely unrestricted. Additionally, truckers from Turkey, Poland, and Hungary would be prime dealers of porn to the Romanian population.
Being not too far from Turkey, Romanians living in Constanta could sometimes catch Turkish TV signals and enjoy some vaguely erotic belly dancing as basic masturbation material. Their pirate TV station access was nothing compared to those living in Western Romania, however.
Romanians living in the Western regions of the country such as Timișoara bordering the more sexually opened minded Yugoslavia and Hungary had more options of acquiring porn. Although not as wild as the West, Yugoslavia had a solid porn industry. Hungary sold Playboy magazine. Making both of these countries a major source for porn smuggling into Romania at the time.
This porn varied massively. It could be anything from VHS and nude posters to erotic playing cards and magazines bought at flea towns at the border and smuggled in. It also consisted of trying to capture Yugoslav TV signals and tap into the porn being enjoyed over the border.
The Yugoslav rock band Bijelo Dugme is considered to one of the most popular bands to exist in the former Yugoslavia. Aside from making some great tunes, they also produced some rather racy album covers. Many of which were smuggled into Romania and used as masturbation material. No such thing as bad publicity, as they say!

During one of my trips to modern Romania, I browsed a cracking little flea market in Bucharest.
